The Houston Area Urban League steamed along to another success with its annual Equal Opportunity Day Gala held at the Hilton Americas-Houston. Despite the sluggish economy, the gala brought in almost $500,000 and drew a crowd of close to 1,000 for an evening of praise for the organization’s 41 years of serving the community. In addition to the serious programming, the entertainment proved well worth the price of admission. Actor, comedian and writer Finesse Mitchell kept the laughs flowing. Thank you, Comcast, MTV and BET, which underwrote his appearance. The party closed down with the swinging sounds of Scott Gertner, his music enticing an SRO crowd to the dance floor.
