The Promises of the United States Constitution

In my 14 years as President, we have not been as pressed to respond during my tenure than we are now. The importance of being aggressive in our response to SB1 and to respond and educate everyone, forces the Urban League to join ranks with others concerned about our democracy as well as the general public to make plain the issue at hand.

It is an uncomfortable position for our Board and staff leadership, but we did not ask for this unnecessary fight. Our mission compels us to take a stand for the hard-fought battles of our ancestors to ensure access to the polls and to the truth about our adversaries. We simply cannot look the other way. We are doing important work daily at the Urban League and we are thankful to have the privilege to do so as we partner with many including our State to help us resolve the issues of the less fortunate. Unfortunately, we have reached the line in the sand that has caused us to push back in a fashion less expected of the Urban League, however, we did not ask for the fight we now find ourselves in. This fight is not just about the Urban League, it is about those we are missioned to serve. We owe it to our belief and faith in our democracy to not wither at this historic time in the trajectory of our State.

I am saddened that we are here, but I am reminded by this event that we must be active in our fight for the freedoms we have fought so hard to have. Elections matter, and we will fight this fight while pledging to educate future generations of their responsibility to protect our progress. As African Americans and other under resourced groups, we have an obligation to our history to preserve our progress and deny those who attempt to erase it.

We hope that you will continue to support us during these times of division in our State. Let us stand strong for people of color and others that are treated unfairly. We are all Americans deserving of the promise of our Constitution. We only want what everyone was promised, equality, opportunity, and access to the American Dream. Without unfettered access to the vote, it will always be a dream and never a reality.
